Confronting the Crime:
To improve the prosecution process and conviction rates of domestic violence offenders, the Legal System Task Force organized a domestic violence training for over 200 law enforcement officers and prosecutors. Attendees learned from national experts about best practices for handling of domestic violence cases. Topics included evidence collection, court testimony and prosecution without a witness. This session marked the first shared training of these two groups on this topic in 20 years.

Project Dignity:
An unprecedented four year joint initiative of the Columbus Coalition Against Family Violence and the Columbus Bar Foundation, Project Dignity helped domestic violence victims with their legal needs. These included: civil protection orders, divorce, contested child custody, housing and landlord-tenant disputes, and employment and health insurance benefits. Project Dignity assured that three attorneys from the Legal Aid Society of Columbus were available to help victims.

In 2006, the Legal Aid Society of Columbus received federal funding and was able to continue serving domestic violence victims apart from the Coalition.

Court Watch:
For the first time in our local history, a group of paid, trained citizens systematically tracked and monitored domestic violence cases in Franklin County Municipal Court.

In 2000, Court Watchers studied more than 1,500 misdemeanor cases with the goal of improving the criminal justice system’s response to domestic violence. Since then, the Legal System Task Force has used the findings from Court Watch to guide some of our new initiatives.
