The Center for Child and Family Advocacy

In partnership with Columbus City Schools, the Coalition created a family violence prevention program to respond to the connection between children’s inability to learn and violence in the home. The Coalition began this initiative in 2005.

The initiative uses a four-pronged approach: on-going support, training and education for school staff; assistance with development and implementation of a school-wide violence prevention program; parent education sessions; and three social workers to offer support and education to students, families and staff.

Since its inception, the social workers have received nearly 1,200 referrals from school staff. Presentations on safety at home or teen dating violence have been provided to over 1,500 students. Nearly 900 parents received support and education during parent sessions. Over 900 staff members received training about family violence and its effects on children and/or training on how to implement a school wide violence prevention program.

For more information about this initiative and a list of participating schools, please write to us.
